Historical landmarks

1996

  • June 1st → Order of the commandant of the Land Forces Staff → establishment of the Foreign Language Center in Sibiu → attached to the Land Forces Academy „Nicolae Balcescu”
  • first intensive courses of English, French and German, taught by visiting teachers (at the time)

    1997

  • tenured employment of first language teachers for the three languages
  • first courses held in two different locations (the Artillery School and the Land Forces Academy)
  • partnership between the Romanian MoD and UK → training sessions for English testing in acordance with the British system, a preliminary phase ahead of implementation of Stanag testing
  • initiation of a long-lasting partnership between MoD and the French Embassy → appointment of one assistant teacher from France per year to help with teaching the French courses

    1998

  • initiation of the Romanian – American partnership program for learning English supported by the USA (Defense Language Institute, Texas) and Canada
  • participation in the first workgroup → creation of test items for the STANAG – 6001 performance evaluation tests

    1999

  • gifts from the American partner: two phonetic labs, together with complete sets of American Language Course (ALC) books

    2000

  • beginning of partnership between MoD and the Lancaster University, UK (2000-2003) → master course for the elaboration of the STANAG test

    2001

  • moving into the new quarters (Calea Dumbravii-Street) in a building belonging to the Artillery School
  • agreement with the American partner → start of a teaching assistance project with a focus on Advanced English courses in all foreign language centers of the Romanian Army → for a length of 4 years → with the help of American teaching aides

    2002

  • from 2002 to 2005: participation by a group of teachers of English, French and German to a new project concerning revision of testing procedures within PfP

    2012

  • implementation of the new concept of further learning in the field of foreign language learning, in form of face-to-face intensive courses and on-line courses aimed at helping students maintain their acquired linguistic performance level
  • initiation of an umbrella project consisting of training and exchange sessions on teaching methods and skills with teachers from all the foreign language centers, under the tutelage of the Army’s Department of Human Resources Management



    2018

  • by the Order of the Defense General Staff no. G / S. 1539 of 09.08.2018 → approval of the re-subordination of the secondary language learning centers in the Land Forces to the “Nicolae Balcescu” Land Forces Academy, starting with 01.09.2018
