History

In the last decade of the previous century, as Romania was engaging on its course towards democracy, and along with our country’s endeavours to be accepted as a NATO member, a set of procedures to appropriate elements of the Alliance’s military organization values ensued. It all started with the Mil-to-Mil program that aimed at imparting knowledge and beginner with some specific power points of the American military culture, and continued with the Romanian Army’s participation in the “Partnership for Peace”. Under such auspices, in 1996, within the framework of partnership initiated by the Defense Language Institute from San Antonio, Texas, the first foreign language center of the land forces was established here in Sibiu, with a mission to teach English, French and German to military and civilian personnel belonging to this branch of the Army.

Today, after a 25 year long history, the Foreign Language Center of the Land Forces General Staff, also subordinated to the Land Forces Academy Nicolae Balcescu, has acquired its reputation as a highly professional military education establishment, having instructed a great number of military personnel who have represented and our country and continue to do so in numerous international missions, harvesting recognition of their value and professionalism, with the support of their good knowledge and communication skills in the said NATO languages.
